Abstract

This current thematic section explores the growing field of didactic audiovisual translation (DAT) and its impact on foreign language (FL) learning, particularly in enhancing FL speaking skills. In the last twenty years, several European-funded projects and independent researchers, have delved into the use of audiovisual translation modes such as subtitling, voice-over, dubbing, and audio description in FL education. The present thematic section gathers six studies that focus on the use of DAT to improve speaking skills, an area often underexplored. The contributions of various scholars examine the effectiveness of different DAT modalities (dubbing, audio description, free commentary, voice-over and respeaking) in enhancing speaking skills, including pronunciation, intonation, and pragmatic training, in a variety of FL such as English, Spanish, and Italian.

Author Biographies

Alicia Sánchez Requena, Sheffield Hallam University

Dr. Alicia Sánchez-Requena is currently working as Senior Lecturer in Spanish at Sheffield Hallam University (UK). She has developed a recent interest in multilingualism in early childhood, especially aspects of heritage languages. Her research background is on the field of audiovisual translation in foreign language education, and most of her work has been in the modalities of dubbing and accessibility. In the past, she has worked in higher education at Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Chester; and in secondary education at the Royal Grammar School Guildford. She read Translation and Interpreting at the University of Granada and holds a MA degree in Applied Linguistics to Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language at the University Antonio de Nebrija in Madrid.

Anca Daniela Frumuselu, Universitat de Lleida

Anca Daniela Frumuselu is currently working as a Serra Hunter Lecturer of English at University of Lleida, Spain. She holds a PhD in Language, Literature and Culture from Rovira i Virgili University, Spain and in Educational Sciences from University of Antwerp, Belgium. Her research interests include the study of English foreign language skills through audiovisual translation and subtitling, the use of new technologies in the EFL classroom, intercultural communication, e-learning, m-learning, gamification and virtual exchange. She has been investigating on the effects of subtitling on learners’ colloquial language acquisition and oral skills and on accessibility modalities, such as subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing in the foreign language classroom. Recently, she has participated in various Erasmus+ and I+D+i projects, such as TRADILEX (Audiovisual Translation as a Didactic Resource in Foreign Language Education) and AVTIA (Audiovisual Translation for Inclusion and Accessibility) in collaboration with other international institutions.
